all the better in person

My guess is this was done by a factory worker as a sort of whimsy

plus a decorative border of flowers and vines and corresponding carved edge

I found a near identical one of the same scale in the collection of the Coe Center in Santa Fe, identified as Mohawk, early 20th century, and I trust that is right. 4 5 16" t x 4 5 16" w x 2 1 2" d not including straps.
